Before Hydrogen Cars Just 'Hit the Streets' Has Sufficient Testing Taken Place?

Hydrogen cars have good aspects, as many 'alternative fuel' vehicles do. For pro-environmental friendly corners, reducing what they believe as harmful emissions and pollution from gasoline powered vehicles, has its panacea in vehicles dubbed alternative fuels, or called non-gasoline vehicles.

There is a straightforward element of danger in hydrogen especially when reflecting on the Hindenburg blimp disaster. In-depth details might show, there were other aspect of the fire, than simply hydrogen igniting, however, the incident still remains a bench-mark in history, that gives wariness to hydrogen use for public transportation.

Testing has been done on hydrogen vehicles. The big question set forth here is, has there been enough testing to cover different angles of hypothetical scenarios that might not have been.  Unknown variables, might be a term that sums up an area of focus that could be elusive, albeit is vital to safety.

"Today's hydrogen fuel tanks are also made from highly durable carbon fiber whose strength is assessed not only in crash tests but also in trials in which bullets are fired at it." [http://www.computerworld.com/article/2852323/heres-why-hydrogen-fueled-cars-arent-little-hindenburgs.html]

Take for example the following scenarios:
  • High speed collisions, where a driver was racing in speeds beyond 100mph
  • Collisions involving crushing, such as the hydrogen car with a large truck, where it really does not matter how tough the hydrogen encasement is, bullet proof or otherwise; an 18 wheeler travelling 75 mph that slams into the back of an average sized sedan, especially when trapped between something else, another truck, a hill at an embankment, the casing and the car is likely going to be crushed; when that happens hydrogen will also probably escape.
  • Fuel or fire from another vehicle that is not a hydrogen vehicle, in a collision situation, and the hydrogen leak shut-off mechanism is not activated. This refers to a scenario where flames or sparks can still react with the hydrogen, but were not enough to trigger hydrogen safety features.
  • Perhaps some of the largest dangers are dangers in the unknown.  When the safety feature is compressing the surrounding hydrogen case even tighter, does that make the pressure on the hydrogen, in some sense or ways, even greater, making it even more of a  danger if there is a string enough of an impact on it to cause an after-effect?
    • E=mc squared, and spray-starch cans in reference, the more pressure packed into the container, the stronger the release, perhaps.
There could be an infinite number of probabilities in types of scenarios that could cause a dangerous hydrogen reaction.

Reactions are not just limited to fire.
Children sleeping in the car in garage, when the motor is running, is something that might be worth looking into.

Unfortunately, in this day and age, we have to look at situations that are extreme, and involve using the equipment in ways that are divergent from a trustworthy driver.

With that, laws that penalize for tamperment (tampering) with hydrogen safety mechanisms, might be an idea. Such effort would preclude usage of hydrogen vehicles for other uses not in the best ideal of humankind.

"At last week's Los Angeles Auto Show [article written November 26, 2014], several major car companies, including Audi, Honda, Hyundai and Toyota, announced the release of, or updated plans to release, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles this year or within the next two years." [http://www.computerworld.com/article/2852323/heres-why-hydrogen-fueled-cars-arent-little-hindenburgs.html]

Dangers Overview [courtesy What are the dangers of hydrogen-powered vehicles? ]:
Topping the list of concerns is hydrogen burns. In the presence of an oxidizer -- oxygen is a good one -- hydrogen can catch fire, sometimes explosively, and it burns more easily than gasoline does. According to the American National Standards Institute, hydrogen requires only one 10th as much energy to ignite as gasoline does. A spark of static electricity from a person's finger is enough to set it off. Ideally, no oxygen should be present in the liquid hydrogen tanks in a fuel cell vehicle, but trace amounts of air may contaminate the hydrogen supply. If the hydrogen should escape, it will immediately come into contact with the oxygen in air.
Another concern is that hydrogen flames are nearly invisible. When hydrogen catches fire, the flames are so dim and hard to see that they're both hard to avoid and hard to fight.
Next, there's the potential for hydrogen to asphyxiate people. Hydrogen isn't poisonous, but if you should breathe pure hydrogen you could die of asphyxiation simply because you'll be deprived of oxygen. Worse, you won't necessarily know that you're breathing hydrogen because it's invisible, odorless and flavorless -- much like oxygen.
The final concern that we want to mention here is that liquid hydrogen is cold. Because it's highly compressed, liquid hydrogen is extremely cold. If it should escape from its tank and come in contact with skin it can cause severe frostbite.

Other Dangers Brought to Forefront
The key theme of this entire article, considering that there have been numerous articles about safety hazards pertinent hydrogen vehicles, are situations that have not been tested for, and might not be apparent as a danger, until a real situation happens. Maximizing ranges of scenarios for safety testing might minimize dangers, however, getting to them all is just like gasoline and electric vehicles, work will have to continue as an ongoing effort.

Confer 'Safety issues regarding fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen fueled vehicles'
"Hydrogen also has many characteristics that warrant its being handled with great care. Hydrogen-air mixtures can ignite or explode at both lower and higher concentrations of the gas (1) in the air than CNG or methane. Hydrogen is more easily ignited than other fuels. The impact of this is negligible, however, as most other fuels can already be ignited by small amounts of static electricity." ]
III. Areas of Concern The two prime dangers from fuel cell and hydrogen-powered vehicles are the danger of electrical shock and the flammability of the fuel.
   Outline of other concerns:
  • Electric current
  • Electrical Drive System
  • Internal fuel transmission and consumption
    • Thus, the main fuel-related issues for fuel cell safety regard the use of hydrogen. While being a very clean and energy-dense fuel, hydrogen has the tendency to disperse quickly under normal pressure.
  • Fuel Storage
  • Fueling
  • Maintenance
  • Parking of the vehicle
    • Parking a hydrogen vehicle or other gas-fueled vehicle in an enclosed structure is a serious safety concern as it can lead to a buildup of the gas. Hydrogen’s tendency to rise and disperse rapidly makes this the only situation in which small leaks can create extremely dangerous situations.
  • Emission
  • Detection
[https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/sfm/programs-services/Documents/Responder%20Safety/Alternative%20Fuels/FuelCellHydrogenFuelVehicleSafety.pdf

Regarding detection, is seeing a fire when there is a fire; when a fire cannot be seen, it might be harder to put out, or respond to.

Situations that occur, when all safety precautions have been taken, everyone has done what they were supposed to, and abided by all laws, but, an accident happens anyway; are we ready for these scenarios, with hundreds or thousands of hydrogen cars on the roads in the next few months?

"...Fiery explosion August 26 at a General Motors-owned hydrogen station at the Greater Rochester International Airport (causing it to be briefly closed). Two people were injured, one of them seriously enough to require hospitalization.
The incident was sparked (which may be the right word) when an employee... was switching out one of the station's large hydrogen tanks. It's unclear what happened, since the worker (who will fully recover) was following proper safety procedures. O'Connell thinks some kind of equipment failure may have occurred." Abductions Especially of Teens Might be International Epidemic

Temporary blog post.
Pro tem, [at the initial time of this blog post,] mainly with respect to recent developments in the Palestinian region, in the Middle East, there has been some 'eye for eye' resembling activity, in context of teen abductions. There may be other events in that region that did not hit the radar screen.
A short list of many, of other similar events:
  • Abductions reference Japan/ North Korea
  • Human trafficking and smuggling from Mexico into the U.S.
  • Argentinian children missing by the hundreds if not thousands a few decades ago
  • Abduction/missing teens in the U.S. generally; cited is reappearance of victim miles away from place of disappearance
A change from yesterday, this post will stay here, the lessons applicable where applicable.

Emphasizing to contact the proper authorities if you suspect that the disappearance of someone is probable.  If you see a suspect, or are not sure whether someone might be a person that engages in the crime of abductions, kidnapping, contact the authorities and quickly explain the circumstances.

If the kidnapper did not defy logic, then the ability to hide with that tool, would be taken away.  Just because an event occurred thousands of miles away, and could involve a suspect being screened at a transportation terminal, does not mean that it is impossible for suspects to appear elsewhere.

Areas that Might Benefit from Strengthening: In the Wake of Fort Hood and Mud Slide Disasters

Many commendations must be given for the amount of success and progress for the levels of safety and peace, that we here in the U.S. currently have. Generally speaking, national headlines have not spelled out disaster at a high frequency within recent months, a very good sign.

Albeit, the U.S. every now and a then has been struck with events of tragedy, both under the will of man, and acts of nature which are harder, however, not necessarily impossible, to control.

Steps that can be taken to mitigate the amount of the tragic outcome is surely in process. Briefly, here are a few comments:
  • Mud slide rescue technology
  • Emergency rescue vehicles especially designed for mud slide disasters

With global climate changes, and ozone layer depletion, glaciers may be melting, pushing warmer waters to correlating areas, slowly, as is the nature of large bodies of water movement as it appears, however, the force of these waters is extremely powerful, weighing in the tons per units of areas, and hundreds of them. Mud slides and other events, such as sudden dropping of land masses, floods, large animal invasions, precipitation causing increase in intensity of storms, might be in the realm of possibility.

  • Are structures like mud dams and levees, like the ones that were to protect from Hurricane Katrina, going to be necessary?

  • More elaborate and comprehensive warning systems for imminent mudslides. Emergency exit strategies and drills, just like for fires.

Historically and generally speaking, coasts are a line of defense, from just about anything that could head inland, including natural disasters.

The west coast has vulnerabilities as demonstrated, in the areas that include but not limited to:
  • wildfires
  • floods
  • mudslides
  • earthquakes
On the Atlantic coast, proportionate types of natural disasters have occurred, and might change over time.

Looking at the outlying border areas further still, are Texas, reference at least 2 serious shootings at Fort Hood, one of which occurred within past few days.

Are there ethical dilemmas that not need be, that have raised tension in a state known for history such as cowboy legends, and events among them 'Juneteenth', commemorating Civil War soldiers, many of whom are credited as the ancestral fathers of thousands of Americans through honorable marriages?

Helicopter Safety Improvements Within Reality

Helicopters in this day and age, is taken to be a technology that is not intended to have crashes and accidents at levels of regularity. The frequency of reported helicopter crashes in recent months does not befit what we are accustomed to having as the conception of helicopters.

One out of three cars crashing every 3 minutes in ordinary weather, would be an absurdity. If every time a spaceship was sent to outerspace, there was a mishap, it would be a conflict of interest in establishing the technology.

It is known that building a helicopter can be expansive. Safety features sacrificed for cost of construction minimization, is up for question. How much is really being saved, when lives are being lost at the rate they have been lately? Markedly of reference is the recent crash this week in an area about 150 miles west of Denver, Colorado.

Notions of sequences of causes and events, as it stands now, does not have to be, in terms of improvements in helicopter safety that can be made for the better.

There are a few basic technologies that are already in existence, that if applied to helicopters, might have an effect to increase the safety of passengers of helicopters and the air vehicle itself.

One unfortunate notion that might commonly be held currently, is that if and when a helicopter crashes, the results are disastrous; what was up in the sky came down, and the force of the crash caused bodily damage, almost always assumed to be fatal, with rare exceptions of a miracle. This picture in held in mind, does not have to be, and the sequence of events of flight crash and fatality, does not have to be reality.

Looking at a photo of the crash that occurred outside Denver on Monday, the helicopter was still in many ways intact.

Visiting, what if, certain technologies had existed, now presented is a summary of 3 technologies already in use, toward study for application to helicopters:

1- Thermal protection pods
These are the same pods that are used by firemen that contend with high temperature forest and wildfires. When it looks like the fire has become overwhelming, they can inflate the emergency pods, protecting them from thermal injuries.

2- Air bags
Many cars now have air bags. The same or similar concept applied to helicopters, a larger airbag, or sets of them, that accomplish the safety objective, placed in helicopters, might reduce injury caused by sudden impact. With something that resembles a waterbed, in situations where helicopters crash resulting in impact and jolting effects of the body, if the passengers were cushioned, there could possibly be a decrease in the rate of injury.

3- Sprinkler systems
Trinkling water like sprinkler systems in old office buildings, might not be sufficient in a helicopter fire. The idea of having a system that forcefully smothers flames whether water or some other mechanism, that is activated when needed, could help minimize or prevent thermal injuries.

Combinations of these, and further development of a vast set of technologies, is as innate in importance as the vehicle themselves.

Google Goggles and the Trends of Driving Laws Might be an Almost Negligible Concern. Project Glass: Jumping Out of Airplanes and Scaling Buildings While Wearing the Google Goggles Can be Done and Has Been Tested.

First, a video of Project Glass.  The Google Goggles allows extreme activities while they are able to 'watch' their computer screen at the same time.

11.5 minute Project Glass overview videos, June, 2012:

A 2 minute Project Glass skydiving video:

Texting and driving, as many of you may have heard, is now illegal, at least in some states.  The severity of restrictions on cell phone and PDA has increased, while the ease of use of them due to technological upsurge has increased.  There are some that might complain, and argue, what is the point of developing and buying these technologies if they are only going to be taken away from us?

Severe car accidents is one of the answers.  The effort is to minimize the number of injuries that remotely might have a correlation to texting while driving, or altogether distracted due to the cell phones and PDAs while simultaneously driving.  The increment of time while being distracted that could cause an accident can surprise you, and, the slightest delusion of how much time elapsed while taking your eyes off the road, to entertain what is on your cell phone, might be too much time to have acted prudently.

We are coming up on an era of technological advances where technologies such as the Google Goggles might be a commonality in a few years.  The goggles allows you to see what is in front of you, like clear glasses for those that do not have a glasses prescription, and see what would be on a computer screen, at the same time, accomplished through a tiny mechanism that is placed on a lense, and close to the eye.

Motorola TX500 Bluetooth In-Car Speakerphone 89494N
The future might hold more, telescopic lenses technology, photo, video, and much more.

While driving, is it the smartest thing to do to, in viewing your computer screen while driving at the same time?    Are there cognitive distortions in the process of making judgement decisions while driving, such about the traffic in front of you, while judging something on the computer screen at the same time; will 2 objects become confused, etc.?

Are we going to wait years after the a gamut of different glasses have made their advent before finally announcing laws, which in refined manner allow the continuance of technology moving forward and upward, while making certain a fringe-realm of incidents do not occur with even any indirect correlations to the glasses.

Along the lines of, 'no eyewear computer viewing while driving', might be an expectation, for those who are less fortunate when it comes to visual and mental capacities, such as the elderly, or new drivers?

What is the difference between the eyewear, and the speedometer LED reading on your windshield; if there is virtually no difference, why should there be a concern?

Much of what would comprise any concern, amongst the keys are, subtle changes the eye undergoes, when placed under certain conditions, and changes in focus duress, before going into hard fact science detail.

We have probably all arrived, developing the laws now, and the technologies now that will be minimize the possibilities of traffic accidents upon these technologies emerging, could be steps in the right direction.

Developing the technologies now, so that they are effective, and safe, is what Project Glass is doing.  As the video demonstrates, the Google Goggles are being taken through the rigors of all kinds of extreme tests.

To be continued.

An Expensive Weather Condition You Need To Know About

We, as in the United States, this past year have gone a record number of 'weather disasters', and might be on pace for more records of these to come. Elementary, let's look at what kinds of disasters are spoken of:

hurricanes

floods

heat waves

Like an exam question, name the disaster, and the dates and place they occurred, hurricanes took place on the eastern shore line...
Loss of life is not down to an exam question, that is why we have to take action to change, and do something about it.

Now, let us look at a kind or a type of weather disaster, which might seem new to some, the reality is, it is ancient old.

The United States might have gotten a taste of it just a few months back, in the southern part of the country...

It is a concept that does not really match up with the common popular sciences in terms of a reality that could exist
In consideration we have seen it, it does strike as a reality that can indeed exist

It is often translated as the scream

This is a weather disaster that needs preparation, in the mix with the rest of the disasters, floods, tornadoes, etc.
Agencies, such as FEMA, EPA, your local emergency and rescue crews, and even you as an individual, need to know how to prepare yourself for the 'scream'

The name of this really, at the root is Seeha
Sometimes, it is seen as the Seeha, or al Seeha, which pretty much arrives at the same meaning.

Historically, the Seeha, affected a generally blinded people, as in blinded from proper, good guidance; that is the fable

These levels of 'punished' was affected upon a, lightly and broadly speaking, described people about their deeds, or the failure to do good ones

The Scream is something, a weather condition, which can 'seize' a group of people
So it comes through the land, it blasts through, in mighty blast manner, -- do weather analysts see an 'eye' of these blasts, like what can be seen of a tornado or hurricane? The end effect, of these types of events, in terms of devastation might be close to the same, but how do you track it?

Main concern, if it is not you, that should be the victim, how can I protect myself?

Afterthought: a re-emergence of the essence of a phenomena that used to occur hundreds or thousands of years ago?

Practical background:

Where did this scream occur, perhaps as a 'phenomena', in much the same way, bones are found, after the 'Flood' [reference Ark]?

In the area now known as the Hadhramawt, translated as 'valley of death', some say due to its remoteness with arid conditions, which is near the southern coast of Yemen and Oman, in the day of Prophet Hud, one of these 'scream' events occurred. Scientists can easily go to the region, if not there already, and study how the blast had effects on people and property. The era that this occurred, can also be calculated without much difficulty.

Where did this scream, or event which markedly resembles what is interpreted as described as the scream that occurred thousands of years ago, occur in the U.S. [so far]?
Whether [directly to whatever degree] correlated or not, here is what a writer had to say, applicable insofar as recent:
"As the U.S. Government deals with the latest debt crisis, the economy is in the forefront of everyone's minds this summer. For us in the weather industry, we have noticed that the economy is also affected by everything we see, because different weather creates different issues (and can even open a few doors in a good way).
If you're an entrepreneur, the Southwest is the place to be right now. Large dust storms known as haboobs have hit the Phoenix area a couple of times in the last few weeks, covering everything in a thick cloud of dust."
'Summer Weather Plays Games with the Economy', by Sean Breslin http://www.weather.com/outlook/weather-news/news/articles/heat-wave-economy_2011-07-19

This is the kind of thing that is being talked about:
Watch this video [click the link or go to this URL, and watch the video]:
http://tv.breitbart.com/massive-dust-storm-envelops-phoenix/

The photo below taken from, http://www.eenews.net/public/Landletter/2009/05/14/1, gives an idea of what the aftermath of Seeha could like like
The article goes on to describe some ideas of preparedness or circumvention, and describes the climate that the event dwells.
"Early snowmelt is not a new problem the West, but its causes are becoming increasingly well known to scientists who have studied the phenomenon.

Dust storms, one of the main contributors to the problem, are a key culprit, and they promise to grow worse as grazing, mining and increased recreational use remove vegetative cover and to expose loose soils to wind.

...The blowing sand also causes a number of other problems, including respiratory distress for local residents and disrupting highway traffic.
...If such conditions persist, ...this year's [2009] dust storm intensity and early snowmelt could become the norm across the region.

...USGS research ecologist, said focused attention could help reverse the trend, but it will take more effort on the part of government and landowners.

One more photo, courtesy the LA Times [comment, obviously this is the dust cloud that rose over Phoenix, howbeit, it might be in combination or correlation to a the elements of storms in context, placed here for imagery purposes]:

From an economic standpoint, a primary concern is what if one of these scream-blast events take place in a major city?

Let's take a look at 3 big disasters that involved violence in the very recent years.

  • Virginia Tech shooting

  • Fort Hood shooting

  • Pittsburgh Gym shooting

All 3 of these had 1 thing in common: News reports state that the shooters were posting messages on computers. Of concern, morbid messages, and postings indicative that someone might get hurt. The postings at least hinted that the authors were emotionally upset.

Now let's look at the possibilities of how these incidents could have been prevented. Markedly, look at 1, viable, smart way that they could have been prevented: Computer and internet security and monitoring. There are 2 sets of software, that when installed, and used to higher levels of effectiveness, perhaps, shootings like those at Virginia Tech, Fort Hood, and Pittsburgh, would never had happened.
